Most often deployed as a component of blended whiskies, grain whisky can be a thing of true beauty given a good amount of time in the right cask. The fact that it is far cheaper to produce than single malt and that there is less consumer demand for it as a category means you can occasionally get your hands on something of notable age and rarity for not much more than you might pay for a core release from some distilleries. An excellent example here from Islay-rooted, family-owned independent bottlers Ferguson, who’ve selected a 35-year-old single grain whisky from Edinburgh’s North British Distillery, full of developed sweet flavours, for this limited offering. One of just 107 bottles from a single bourbon barrel, presented at cask strength of 42.6% abv without artificial colour or chill filtration.
Sweet caramels, pineapple, fudge and creamy vanillas on the nose lead into sticky toffee pudding, custard, sugared popcorn and soft herbal notes on the palate, with more deliciously sweet notes dominating the long finish.
